Situated in Aquitaine, in the western part of France, Bordeaux is famous worldwide for its wines, but lately the city itself is drawing the attention of tourists thanks to its splendid gothic cathedrals and 18th century mansions. Located on the Garonne River, Bordeaux is often referred to locally as the “French Sleeping Beauty”. However, these days Bordeaux is far from a sleepy city and has recently undergone considerable renovation. Many of its most beautiful and elegant Neo-classical buildings have been completely restored and a number of spacious boulevards are now completely pedestrianised. Following these improvements, tourism is once again booming in Bordeaux.

Bordeaux’s old town is particularly charming and stretches from the river, where you can discover a long sweep of elegant Classical facades to the Eglise Notre Dame which was built from 1684 to 1707. In between lies the Grand Theatre built in 1773 which is a masterpiece of the Classical style and crowned by 12 statues of the muses. Bordeaux is also blessed with large open spaces and parks, one of the most famous being the Esplanade des Quinconces.

Bordeaux city is the centre of the wine trade for the whole of the Bordeaux Region and is the oldest trading port in France. From Roman times the export of wine was the basis for its prosperity.
