City Packages, Gastronomy and Wine
City of history and city of
theatre, the fortified city of Avignon will leave you charmed by its
architecture marked by papal history. Entering through any one of the seven
doors of the superbly preserved walls, one discovers the “City of the Popes”.
The massive ramparts enclose this fascinating town. The huge Palais de Papes is
the dominant feature, but the town contains other riches. To the north of the
Palais is the 13th century Petit Palais, once the arch-bishop of Avignon’s
residence. A short walk through the park behind it will take you to a stunning
lookout over the river and the countryside. There are also some notable
churches. The Pont d’Avignon (Pont St. Benezet) built from 1172 to 1185 had 22
arches, until most were destroyed by floods in 1668. One of the remaining arches
bears the tiny Chapelle St. Nicholas.
The city contains many lively squares filled with restaurants, shops and buskers.
Take your time wandering about the streets of Avignon, you’ll discover ancients
streets, charming courtyards and impressive architecture of the private
mansions.
Avignon stands high above the immense plains of the Rhone River and is the
perfect location as a base to discover the magical attractions of Provence.
Food and wine is an important part of life in the South of France. Here you will
find delicious cuisine using produce grown locally – olives, lavender, honey,
herbs and spices just to name a few. Wine is also a very important part of daily
life and the wine growing areas close to Avignon produce some of the best wines
in France. For the tourist Avignon is an interesting and diverse location and
you’ll want to return many times to enjoy the relaxed and friendly lifestyle.
