Beaune is a delightful town situated in the heart of the Burgundy wine growing region. It is a most satisfying town to visit because of its compactness and charm. It is circled by fortified walls, built in the 13th and 14th centuries, and while the town has now expanded far beyond this military corset, most that is of interest lies within. The origins of the town go back to Roman days and on a town plan the circular trace of the “appidum” can still be seen. Today, the walls and towers of the fortifications are used to store wine, and while expanding business and modern machinery have led many companies to construct new premises outside the town, most of the important ones still have their offices and much of their stock in the town centre, stored in deep vaulted cellars with walls up to seven metres thick.
One of the main attractions of the town is the Hospices, a marvel of Burgundian-Flemish art, founded as a hospital in 1443. It has survived intact and was used as a general hospital until 1971.
It is possible to visit some of the many miles of cellars below the streets, and as this is the wine capital of Burgundy, it is surrounded by some of the most famous names in winemaking.
