DORDOGNE

The “gem” of the Dordogne Valley is the medieval town of Sarlat-La-Caneda which possess the highest concentration of medieval, Renaissance and 17th century facades of any town in France. The protected houses are rich in ornamental detail and now form an open air museum. The town is also famous for one of the best markets in France.

However, Sarlat is not the only gorgeous town in the area. The Dordogne Valley is blessed with many beautiful villages which are perched on the steep banks of the River. One of the best views can be seen from Domme, taking in the Dordogne Valley from Beynac in the west of Montfort in the east.

The area is also famous for its prehistoric cave paintings which can be seen at Lascaux.

You will also visit some villages in the Lot Valley, the most famous being Rocamadour, a site of pilgrimage since 1166. The village today is a preserved monument sitting on a rocky peak above the Alzou Valley. The view from the top is phenomenal.

The Dordogne is also a gastronomic paradise. You will find fabulous duck and fois gras dishes, the produce sourced from the many farms in the area. Wine is produced in nearby Bergerac. Walnuts are grown in abundance throughout the valley. Wild mushrooms are found in the woods, and in January the black truffles appear at the market.
