Day 1:
Depart Paris Gare du Nord at around 7.50am for arrival in
Arras at 9am. (Train fare not included). You will be met at
the station by your minibus driver and taken on a tour of
some of the most important sites of the Somme:
Villers-Bretonneux, including the Victoria School, Adelaide
Cemetery and the Australian National Memorial, Le Hamel,
Sailly-le Sec and the Australian 3rd Division Memorial, the
Red Baron crash site, Lochnager Crater, the Killing Fields
of Pozieres and the Australian 1st Division Memoral, Mouquet
Farm to Thiepval, Irish Peace Tower, the Canadian New
Foundland Park, Deville Wood and the South African National
Memorial, plus more. Today’s tour includes a sit down lunch
in Albert. Return to accommodation in Arras. Evening free
Day 2:
Your tour today will be to Fromelles and Ypres. We leave the
beauty of Arras and travel directly to the tragedy of
Fromelles, the scene of such a huge Australian tragedy that
history tried to forget that it ever happened. Onto the
hidden All Australian Cemetery in Ploegesteert Wood,
Messines, the impressive Spanbroekmolen Crater, sleepy
Poperinge, Hill 60, Hooge Crater Military Cemetery, Polygon
Wood (Australian 5th Division Memorial), Passchendaele, Tyne
Cot Military Cemetery and finally into Ypres. Relax over a
delicious evening meal in the wonderful town centre of
Ypres, and then prepare to be overwhelmed by the awesome
Menin Gate and the solemn “Last Post” ceremony conducted
there each day at 8pm. Lunch is also included in the tour.
Return to Arras around 10pm.
Day 3:
Depart after breakfast. Note there are regular direct train
services to Paris, the trip takes approximately 50 minutes.
